Why animation with African characters makes your message land

People remember stories that look and sound like their lives. Relatable animation lets brands explain, entertain and sell in a way stock footage and generic templates never will.

Think about the last advert you actually remembered. Chances are it told a small story, had a character you recognised, or made you laugh at something that felt true. It probably did not feature a stock photo of people in an office that could have been anywhere in the world.

Audiences scroll past content that does not feel like it was made for them. Animation, done with care, solves that problem in a way few other formats can. And when the characters, settings, humour and voices feel African, the message lands with the people it was meant for.

The real problem: content that looks like everyone else's

Many brands rely on the same few options for visual content: stock footage, template videos and product photos. They are quick and cheap, but they come with costs:

  • They look generic, so they blend into the feed
  • The people and places often do not reflect the audience
  • Complex products and services are hard to explain with a photo and a caption
  • Live-action shoots for anything more ambitious can be expensive and hard to change later

The result is content that technically exists but does not move anyone.

Why animation works

Animation gives you control that live action cannot. You can show the inside of a process, simplify a complicated service, or build a world around your brand without location fees, weather or reshoots.

  • It explains. A one-minute explainer can make a complex product clear.
  • It is memorable. Characters and stories stay with people longer than slogans.
  • It is flexible. Scenes, scripts and voices can be adjusted and re-cut for different platforms and languages.
  • It is ownable. A character built for your brand can appear across adverts, social posts and campaigns for years.

Why African style matters

Representation is not a box to tick. It is how people decide whether something is for them. When viewers see characters who look like them, in places they recognise, speaking in a way that sounds familiar, they lean in. That relatability is valuable for brands selling across Africa and for brands reaching the diaspora who want to see home reflected in what they watch.

It also opens creative territory that is still underused: African humour, family dynamics, markets, music and everyday moments that make content feel specific rather than generic.

What makes a good animation brief

Great animation starts with a clear brief. Before you approach a studio, be ready to answer:

  • Who is the audience, and what do you want them to feel, think or do?
  • What is the single message? One idea per piece works best.
  • How long should it be, and where will it run: TV, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, your website, events?
  • What style do you like? Share a few references.
  • What is the deadline, and is it tied to a launch or campaign?

How the process should work

A professional animation project moves through clear stages with approval points, so there are no surprises at the end. Characters, styleframes and a storyboard come before animation begins. Voice, sound and music are planned as part of production, not added as an afterthought. And final files are delivered in the formats each channel needs.

Getting more from every piece

A good animation should not live in one place. Plan from the start how one production can become several assets: a full-length version for YouTube or your website, short cut-downs for Instagram and TikTok, still frames for posts and posters, and characters you can reuse in future campaigns. Thinking about distribution early makes every naira spent on production work harder.

Inside Percent Studio

Animation and content production at Seven Hundred Percent is delivered by Percent Studio, the group's animation studio, formerly known as Lumora Studio. Percent Studio creates relatable 2D animation with African characters and settings: adverts, explainers and multimedia content for brands, agencies and platforms. Series and film production is in development, and we are open to co-production conversations.

Every project follows four steps. In Brief, we lock the story, style, length and where it will run. In Design, we create characters, styleframes and a storyboard for your approval. In Produce, we handle animation, voice casting and recording, sound design, music and editing, with review rounds. In Deliver, you receive final files in every format your channels need.

Because Percent Studio sits alongside Seven Hundred Percent Digital Marketing and Seven Hundred Percent Music, your animation can be paired with a distribution plan and original sound, all within one group.
