Posting is not marketing: how to build a distribution engine that brings customers

Many businesses post every day and still struggle to sell. The missing piece is not more content. It is a system that gets the right content in front of the right people, and turns attention into customers.

You post every day. The designs are clean, the captions are thoughtful, and the likes come in. But the phone is not ringing any more than it was before, and the sales numbers have barely moved.

This is one of the most common frustrations we hear, and it has a simple cause. Posting is activity. Marketing is a system. One makes you visible for a moment. The other reliably turns strangers into customers, week after week.

The real problem: content without a path

Most business content has nowhere to go. Someone sees a post, likes it, and scrolls on. There is no clear next step, no reason to act now, and no way for the business to follow up. Multiply that by hundreds of posts and you get a lot of effort with very little to show for it.

The usual symptoms:

  • You post on every platform because you feel you should, not because your customers are there
  • Every post is a product photo or a flyer, so people stop paying attention
  • Enquiries arrive in DMs, WhatsApp, email and calls, and some are never answered
  • You run ads occasionally, boost a post, and cannot tell whether it worked
  • You have no list of past customers you can reach without paying for attention again

Think in terms of distribution

Distribution is the work of getting the right message to the right people, through channels you can repeat. A simple distribution engine has four parts.

  • Attention: content and ads that reach the people most likely to buy
  • Capture: a clear next step, such as a WhatsApp chat, a booking link or a form, that turns interest into a contact
  • Follow-up: a habit of replying fast and staying in touch with people who did not buy yet
  • Return: a way to bring past customers back, through a list, offers and referrals

Most businesses invest only in the first part. The money is usually made in the other three.

Choose fewer channels and do them properly

You do not need to be everywhere. You need to be where your customers already spend time, and to show up consistently. A fashion brand may live on Instagram and TikTok. A professional service may do better on LinkedIn and search. A business selling to the diaspora may need search and email as much as social.

Search deserves a special mention. When someone types a question into Google, they are already looking for a solution. Content that answers real customer questions, on a fast website, keeps bringing visitors long after it is published. That is the quiet power of content strategy and SEO.

Content that earns attention

The best-performing business content usually does one of three things:

  • It teaches: answering the questions customers ask you every day
  • It shows: behind the scenes, the process, the people, the result
  • It proves: real customer reactions and real work, shared with permission

Promotional posts still have a place. They just work better when they sit among content people actually want to see.

When to spend on ads

Paid ads are an amplifier. They make a working offer reach more people faster. They do not fix an unclear offer, a slow website or an unanswered inbox. Prove what converts organically first, then put a budget behind it, and agree up front how you will measure success: sales, leads, bookings or reach.

Distribution is not only for products

Distribution applies to creative work too. Music, video and animation need the same thinking: the right platforms, the right timing, and a plan to reach listeners and viewers beyond the people who already follow you. A great release with no distribution plan is a secret.

How our marketing team runs distribution

Seven Hundred Percent Digital Marketing is the group's growth arm. It runs digital promotion and transformation, social media management, paid advertising campaigns, content strategy and SEO, brand deals and influencer partnerships, and content and music distribution. It also handles promotion for the companies in our own group, so the playbook is tested on businesses we run ourselves.

Every engagement follows four steps. We Audit your channels, audience and current performance. We agree a Strategy: goals, channels, budget and a content plan. We Execute: running campaigns, publishing content and managing distribution. And we Report, in plain language, against the numbers we agreed at the start, with clear next steps.

Ongoing growth work runs on retainer, while launches and campaigns run as projects. We work for businesses targeting customers in Nigeria and abroad, including the UK, Canada and the USA.

Because we sit in the same group as our software and animation teams, your website, your ads and your content can be planned together instead of patched together.

If you are posting every day and not seeing results, book a strategy call. We will look at what you are doing now and map out a distribution plan you can actually run.
